Football: Iraqi footballers face probe over night out during Asian Cup
BAGHDAD (AFP) - Iraq's football federation said on Monday (Jan 28) that it was investigating whether the national team players in Abu Dhabi for the Asian Cup this month sneaked out of their hotel to party at a nightclub.
Media reports have alleged that after their draw against Iran last week in the final group-stage match, some Iraqi players travelled to nearby Dubai for a night out.
"We have decided to form a fact-finding committee over what was reported by different media and have invited all relevant parties to take part," the federation said in a statement.
If the allegations prove to be correct, the federation would consider legal action for "defamation" and harming Iraq's reputation, its media head Mohammad Khalaf told AFP.
Iraq were knocked out of the tournament with a 1-0 defeat by Qatar in the last 16.
Last year, Iraqi national teams were embroiled in a string of age-fraud scandals.
Adult players were found to have falsified ages on their passports to represent the Under-16 squad, and the Under-23 team also dropped out of the Asian Games tournament amid similar allegations of lying.
It came as Fifa allowed Iraq to host international matches for the first time in three decades.

ATHENS (REUTERS) - Italy continued their perfect start to Euro 2020 qualifying with a comfortable 3-0 win over Greece in Athens on Saturday (June 8) which sent them three points clear at the top of Group J.
Roberto Mancini's side are in pole position after picking up three wins from their opening three games without conceding a goal.
The visitors blew the Greeks away with three goals in the 10 first-half minutes, with Nicolo Barella opening the scoring when he met an Andrea Belotti pull-back to sweep in the opener.
Lorenzo Insigne doubled Italy's lead with an exquisite curling finish before Leonardo Bonucci completed the rout by heading in a third after 33 minutes.
Greece showed signs of life after the break as Salvatore Sirigu dived to palm away a Kostas Fortounis half-volley, while Italian winger Federico Chiesa squandered a glorious chance to make it four when he fired over unmarked from close range.
Finland moved into second place on six points with a 2-0 win over Bosnia in Tampere.
Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki struck both goals inside 12 second-half minutes, striding through the visiting defence to open the scoring before adding the second with a delicate chip.
The Finns are now unbeaten in their last 10 home games, winning eight and drawing two, and sit two points ahead of Greece and Bosnia in third and fourth places respectively.
Armenia beat Liechtenstein 3-0 in a meeting between the bottom two teams to earn their first points of the campaign and leave the visitors bottom of the group with three defeats.
In the next round of fixtures on Tuesday, Italy host Bosnia in Turin, Armenia face Greece in Athens and Finland travel to Liechtenstein.

LONDON (AFP) - Liverpool defender Joel Matip will be out of action for up to six weeks after suffering a fractured collarbone.
Matip was injured in the final minutes of Liverpool's 1-0 win against Napoli in the Champions League at Anfield on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old landed awkwardly following an aerial challenge and is now set to undergo surgery.

"Early indications suggest the centre-back is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though that is dependent on how Matip responds to his treatment and rehabilitation programmes."
Cameroon centre-back Matip had started the Reds' last three matches and his injury is blow to Liverpool's hopes of remaining on top of the Premier League.

PERTH • Australia captain Tim Paine yesterday praised his emerging team for finding a hard-nosed identity appropriate for their reformed demeanour after a 146-run victory against India in the "bruising" second Test.
Having set the visitors a daunting 287 runs to win on the Perth Stadium pitch, Australia dismissed top-ranked India for 140 midway through the first session on the final day to level the four-match series.
After losing the series opener in Adelaide by 31 runs, the hosts held the upper hand throughout to secure Paine's first win as skipper in his fifth match at the helm.
He told reporters: "Really happy with the competitive, hard style we played. We're slowly building into our style of cricket.
"We stuck to our guns and delivered skill under pressure, and managed to keep ahead in the game."
His side's on-field behaviour was under the microscope in the aftermath of the damaging ball-tampering scandal in March and they have opted for a staid approach since.
In a tension-filled second Test, Paine heatedly clashed with counterpart Virat Kohli on several occasions, conjuring images of previous fiery contests between the teams.
But the wicketkeeper felt Australia had struck the right balance, insisting he was right to "draw a line, and stick up for yourself and teammates".
He said: "We talk about playing on skill and not emotion. We know our best cricket is played when we put emotion aside, (but) we aren't going to sit back and be walked all over."
The 34-year-old also hailed their well-rounded performance, which started with a 112-run opening stand between Marcus Harris and Aaron Finch on the opening morning, laying the platform for a first innings total of 326 - the highest of a low-scoring match.
"As a group, we're relieved, it's been hard work. It's been a bruising test match," Paine added.
"To get a win like that against the No. 1 Test team is going to give us a huge boost of confidence."
The series now shifts to the traditional Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground followed by the finale in Sydney on Jan 3.

Football: Paul Pogba is Manchester United captaincy material, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
MANCHESTER (AFP) - Paul Pogba has the qualities to be captain of Manchester United, according to caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has overseen a dramatic return to form for the World Cup winner.
The France midfielder was told in September by then-manager Jose Mourinho that he would never captain the club again, days after an apparent disagreement over tactics.
Mourinho denied at the time that there had been any fallout between the pair, having taken the decision to strip Pogba of his role as United vice-captain.
The decision was made public days after Pogba appeared to question Mourinho's approach by telling reporters that United should "attack, attack, attack".
Pogba, who performed erratically for his club over the first half of the season, has scored five goals in six appearances since Solskjaer arrived as interim boss on December 19.
The Frenchman made his debut for United's reserve team when Solskjaer was their manager during the 25-year-old's first spell at the club.
The Norwegian said that he has long believed Pogba has what it takes to lead a team, although made clear that he is happy with United's current set-up, with Ashley Young the regular captain on the pitch while Antonio Valencia, who has made just eight appearances this season, is the club captain.
Â
Â
"I know the boy from before, and he's a leader," Solskjaer said ahead of his team's FA Cup fourth-round match against Arsenal on Friday (Jan 25).
"He's a character who influences people. He cares and wants to be successful.
"He knows he can't do it by himself. It's a team game and he's a character who brings so many good things with him when he's enjoying himself, I have to say.
"You see the personality. He loves playing football. He's a larger-than-life character. That's just the way he is.
"When the performances come as well, that marries together as a good leader and you see what it meant to him winning the World Cup. So for me, yes, he's captain material."
Pogba has faced criticism in the past for his enthusiastic use of social media, not least when a post appeared on his Instagram account after Mourinho's December sacking with a picture of himself smiling and the words "caption this".
Former United players Gary Neville and Nicky Butt both criticised the post, which was quickly deleted.
Solskjaer, though, says he is not worried about the way that players such as Pogba and teammate Jesse Lingard use social media.
"It's part of the era we live in," he said. "That's just society now, that's what they're used to, the kids now. I'm not, but they are.
"And it's all positive, it's all good messages and I don't have any problem with that whatsoever because that's Paul, that's Jesse. We've got certain rules obviously, and it's common sense."
Solskjaer said that there were no immediate plans to give Pogba the captain's armband, adding that he felt the role could sometimes be given too much significance.
"Ashley's wearing the armband, yes because Antonio's struggled with fitness as well, in and out," said Solskjaer.
"Antonio's still the club captain, but Ash is wearing the armband when he's playing. I've never been a fan of 'You're this and you're that'."
