Football: Pochettino gives backing to under-fire Lloris

LONDON (AFP) - Mauricio Pochettino said on Tuesday (April 2) that Hugo Lloris will remain in goal for Tottenham despite a series of costly errors this season.
Lloris has endured fresh criticism after his fumble led to Toby Alderweireld's decisive own goal in the final minutes of Tottenham's 2-1 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.
It is not the first time this term the Tottenham captain has made a mistake that ended up haunting his team.
But Spurs boss Pochettino has always backed the France World Cup winner, even in the wake of a drink-driving charge earlier in the campaign.
Pochettino confirmed Lloris would be in goal for Tottenham's first game in their new stadium against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
"He is my captain. He's one of the best keepers in the world. There's no doubt," Pochettino said.
"There's no doubt that Hugo is one of the best and he's going to be in the goal.
"It's a situation that is so painful because I think we deserved more (at Liverpool), but in that kind of situation, which happens in football, it's only to be strong and back our player.
"I think Hugo is going to be, like always, great for us. He was great for us.
"He was so important in all that process in five years, and for sure he's going to be one of the most important players for the future of the club too."
Tottenham's return home to their 62,062-seater stadium could not have come at a better time as they look for a morale boost after a wretched run.
They have taken just one point from their past five Premier League games, which has seen them not only drop out of the title race but also put their top-four place in serious peril.
There were signs of promise in the cruel loss to Liverpool and Pochettino is sure that their new home will be graced by Champions League football next term.

TOP-FOUR FIGHT

"Of course, the best stadium in the world must have the Champions League," he said.
"It would be a shame to not be in the next Champions League.
"But we are going to fight. We are in the top four, disappointed with the last result but of course it's not the same.
"Against Liverpool we deserved more, played really well second half, the feeling was so good. Playing like this I have no doubts we are going to be in the top four and playing in the Champions League next season.
"It's in our hands. It's a mini-league and playing five games in our new stadium will be a big boost for our players and fans. It's up to us to achieve that."
Tottenham, who have been playing at Wembley for the past two years, have had a painstaking wait following frustrating delays to the stadium's opening this season, which have postponed their moving-in date from August 2018.
But Pochettino is ready for a special day in the club's history.
"It's going to be very special, at last the new stadium is a reality," he said. "Now it's so close, just over 24 hours until we play in our new home.
"It's an exciting moment in the history of the club. Everyone will realise the magnitude of the project."

Football: Goal hero Kompany makes good on promise as Man City go top again

MANCHESTER (AFP) - Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany said he had lived up to a vow to "one-day" score a long-range goal after his wonder strike secured a 1-0 win at home to Leicester that left the champions in charge of the destiny of the Premier League title with a match to play.
City were heading for a frustrating evening at the Etihad Stadium on Monday until Kompany let fly with a 25-yard shot into the top corner 20 minutes from time - the centre-back's first City goal from outside the box.
Victory saw City go top by a point from Liverpool heading into Sunday's last round of league matches.
"I hadn't scored this season but I always feel in big moments that I'm going to do something, I don't know if it's a header or what," Kompany told Sky Sports.
"Today was a little bit of frustration, everyone was saying 'don't shoot, don't shoot' and I could really hear it; I thought hold on a second, I've not come this far in my career for young players to tell me if I can take a shot, and I just had a go!" Kompany insisted: "I've scored goals like that in training!
"It's 15 years I've been in top-level football, midfielders telling me 'don't shoot, play the ball wide' and every time they miss, for 15 years I've been saying 'I promise you, one day I'm going to have a shot from outside the box and I'm going to score a goal and you're going to be really happy with that one'."

'Big believer'

City manager Pep Guardiola admitted he too was among those who didn't want Kompany to let fly from distance.
"Don't shoot! Pass the ball, pass the ball!," said Guardiola when asked about his thoughts as Kompany took aim.
"Honestly, I wasn't too confident but football is mad for that. The artists are the players, they have to decide things in a fraction of a second and what's important isn't the goal, it's him shooting while believing he was going to score.
"He's a big believer and that helped us to win the game," the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss added.
"Now we don't have games every three days, he's not young and to be consistent is difficult for him every three days, but when we have a game once every week, he's an incredible player." City will be assured of retaining the title if their result away to Brighton is equal or better to what Liverpool achieve against Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.
However, a win for Liverpool and anything less for City would see the Reds secure their maiden English championship since they last won the old First Division title in 1990.
And Kompany warned: "It's a big goal, we've not achieved anything but it was an important win against a very, very strong team."
But Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who made several fine saves on Monday, said: "City are a top-class side, and we have lost to the potential champions.
"I can't see them losing their next game."

Real blast VAR for not flagging penalty in 2-0 loss

MADRID • A fuming Santiago Solari questioned the point of video technology after Real Madrid were denied what the coach called "a penalty every day of the week" in a shock 2-0 Spanish LaLiga home loss to strugglers Real Sociedad on Sunday.
With Real trailing 1-0 in the second half, Vinicius Jr fell over the outstretched arm of goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli in the box. Referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero neither awarded a penalty nor consulted the video assistant referee (VAR).
"If  VAR is not used in a play like that, then it loses the whole point of its existence," said Solari after the hosts were booed off by 53,412 fans, the Bernabeu's second-lowest crowd this season, following a sixth defeat this season.
"We are all human and we all make mistakes. But, when you have the chance to look over the evidence again and you do not, it's difficult to understand."
The technology has been in use in Spain's top flight since the start of this season.
According to protocol, the VAR operators are only supposed to inform the referee and ask for a play to be reviewed if the official has made an "obvious mistake".
Real also thought they had a penalty in the first half when captain Sergio Ramos collided with Asier Illarramendi, but Solari said he gave the benefit of the doubt to the referee and to VAR.
Ramos called the Vinicius case "scandalous", adding: "I've always supported VAR, but this leaves you with your head in your hands."
For Solari, the honeymoon period he enjoyed in November after replacing Julen Lopetegui is well and truly over. Real are fifth on 30 points after 18 games and the loss almost certainly ended their hopes of catching LaLiga leaders Barcelona, who won 2-1 at Getafe later and are 10 points ahead.
Before kick-off, the European champions paraded the Club World Cup trophy they won for a third straight time. But the mood was punctured three minutes later when Casemiro hauled down Mikel Merino in the box, and Jose Willian smashed his kick down the middle.
Real rallied with a glut of chances but failed to find the net. Midfielder Ruben Pardo sealed the points with a late header for Sociedad's first win at Real since 2004, after the hosts' winger Lucas Vazquez was sent off for a second yellow card.
Real director Emilio Butragueno also took issue with the VAR.
"We are always very respectful towards referees and we are in favour of VAR, but we do not understand this incident," he said. "It was a critical moment."

Football: Mbappe sent off as PSG lose French Cup final to Rennes

PARIS (AFP) - Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle late in extra time as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday's (April 27) French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.
Substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot-kick over the bar in the shootout, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.
It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.
Thomas Tuchel's side appeared poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe's own goal just before the break gave Rennes hope and Edson Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to take a gripping final - attended by President Emmanuel Macron - to extra time.
Penalties were already looming when Mbappe was shown a straight red card by referee Ruddy Buquet for a dreadful challenge on Damien Da Silva near the corner flag.
The France star caught the Rennes defender on the knee with his studs, and can expect a lengthy ban as a result.
Without him, PSG fell short of securing the double in Tuchel's first season in charge, which will also be remembered for their Champions League exit to Manchester United in the last 16.
Instead, it is traditional underachievers Rennes who celebrate a historic victory, their first silverware since the 1971 French Cup also meaning a return to the Europa League next season.

NEYMAR BACK AMONG GOALS

Few of their fans would have imagined that possible after the way they started the game, with PSG looking more like their former selves as Neymar made his first start in three months after injury.
Alongside him, Angel Di Maria was back for his first appearance in more than a month, as PSG went looking for their second trophy in seven days.
Rennes had been knocked out of this competition following heavy defeats by PSG in the earlier rounds in each of the last two seasons, and another hiding looked on the cards as PSG went 2-0 up early on.
The opener came in the 13th minute when a corner fell to Alves just outside the area and he met the ball with a volley from 20 yards that flew low into the corner.
The second goal came midway through the first half, as a stray Hatem Ben Arfa pass was intercepted by Alves and it was Di Maria who sent Neymar through to score with a delightful chip over Tomas Koubek, who had come off his line.
It was a 21st goal of the season for the world's most expensive player, despite that enforced three-month hiatus.
- Rennes battle back - Rennes roused themselves to finish the half strongly, however, and Mbaye Niang struck a post before they reduced the arrears five minutes from the interval. Hamari Traore crossed from the right and Kimpembe sliced the ball into his own net.
They continued to cause problems to PSG at the start of the second half, and it was not a surprise when Rennes equalised in the 66th minute as Clement Grenier's corner from the left was headed home by Mexer, a rare goal from the Mozambican defender.
Into extra time they went, with Tuchel sending on Edinson Cavani, another PSG star who has spent much of the recent weeks on the sidelines.
Neymar set up Mbappe for a shot against the post, but proof that Rennes had done more than just ruffle PSG's feathers came when France's golden boy was sent off. It was not to be his or PSG's night, for once.

Football: Mourinho avoids jail but hit by fine for tax fraud in Spain

MADRID (AFP) - Ex-Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has avoided jail for tax fraud as part of a deal with Spanish prosecutors revealed Tuesday (Feb 5) but will pay a fine of close to two million euros.
The 56-year-old is accused of committing tax fraud in 2011 and 2012 when he coached Spanish giants Real Madrid.
According to the agreement seen by AFP, Mourinho accepted a one-year jail sentence immediately commuted to a fine of 182,500 euros (S$281,908).
The Portuguese coach will also have to pay an additional penalty of 1.98 million euros.
Mourinho, sacked by Manchester United in December following a string of disappointing performances, is the latest high-profile football figure to be judged over his tax affairs in Spain.
Spanish prosecutors accuse Mourinho, who coached Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, of failing to declare income of 1.6 million euros in 2011 and 1.7 million euros in 2012.
The grounds for the case, as with a series of football stars based in Spain, is how income from Mourinho’s image rights was managed and declared.
Prosecutors believe by ceding his image rights to a series of companies based in tax havens, Mourinho committed fraud by not declaring the income those companies made from his image rights.
