They had already spent about $2,000 each for flights and accommodation, and were planning to try their luck with scalpers for the Champions League final tickets in Madrid.
Dinesh Kumar, a 34-year-old Liverpool fan, and his 62-year-old Tottenham-supporting father Dewadas Vellasamy, were willing to pay about $6,000 each but were quoted almost $10,000 each and decided to pass.
Yet the duo, who were part of a group of 20 Singaporeans who had made their way to the Spanish capital last week, still had the time of their lives on Saturday with the football festivities that unfolded outside the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium as Liverpool beat Tottenham 2-0 to lift their sixth European Cup.
Dinesh, who works in the oil and gas industry, told The Straits Times: "It was hot and humid and we were surprised the Liverpool fan zone at Plaza Felipe II had no live screening. We were directed to bars, but they were fully booked and the commentary was in Spanish.
"In the end, we found an Indian bistro which was willing to let us to make a booking and watch the game. Fans from Hong Kong, Australia, Egypt, Malaysia, India and England started streaming in.
"There were so many fans like us who did not have tickets, but we ended up having a crazy party.
"At the final whistle, we were in tears because some of us went to Kiev last year when Liverpool lost and this felt like consolation.
"We went to the fan zone again where people gathered and celebrated with song and dance until 6am."
Dewadas, a retiree who has supported Tottenham since 1974, added: "Naturally, we Spurs fans are quite disappointed. I feel Liverpool won by luck because of the penalty and Alisson's saves.
"But I'm also very happy to be part of history with Tottenham's first Champions League final and witness in person what fans are willing to do for the love of their clubs."
Aaron Kok, a Liverpool fan who runs The Experiences Firm that took 11 fans to Madrid, was impressed by the respect both sets of fans showed despite the intense rivalry.
The 42-year-old said: "Spurs fans deserve huge credit. Visibly fewer in numbers, they were still great sport and created insane noise and atmosphere. They were respectful with friendly banter which should be how all sports fans should behave regardless of the team we support."
He and two other Liverpool fans left their hotel at 4am yesterday to begin a 12-hour commute by plane and car to Merseyside via Rome and London for the trophy parade.
Kok said: "This trip to Liverpool is really quite illogical as there was no guarantee of victory and we could have gone to a very sad city. But life has to be lived through the heart as much as the brain."
Meanwhile, fans in Singapore had various options to follow Saturday's action, including at the Osim Sundown Marathon, where around 300 people gathered to watch the live telecast on a big screen at the runners' village.
After completing the half-marathon in a black Liverpool kit, Eddy Chua, a 22-year-old national serviceman, said: "There was a very lively atmosphere. Even though we were all tired after the run, we kept the atmosphere going.
"I was there alone, but it felt like I was there with friends as we were in it together, cheering for our team when Liverpool scored.
"I supported Liverpool only since 2006 and, from that time on, our only major trophy was the League Cup in 2012. But the Champions League win was our moment to tell the world that this is our time."
Tottenham fan Raama Subramaniyam, a 42-year-old who was also clad in his Spurs jersey, added: "I like the set-up of the live screening, it was well organised and the sound system was good. I just wish I had more friends and Spurs fans around me.
"It was quite a boring game, to be honest. The three-week break after the last Premier League game caused both teams' form to drop and they were both so cautious.
"Spurs attacked in the second half, but didn't convert (their chances), so hard luck to them and congratulations to Liverpool."

Football: City's title bid rocked by Newcastle, United stage late escape

LONDON (AFP) - Manchester City's Premier League title challenge was rocked by a stunning 2-1 defeat at Newcastle, while Manchester United's late escape preserved Ole Gunner Solskjaer's unbeaten start in a dramatic 2-2 draw with Burnley on Tuesday (Jan 29).
City needed a win at St James' Park to close the gap on leaders Liverpool to one point ahead of the Reds' clash with Leicester on Wednesday.
But Pep Guardiola's 100th league game as City manager proved an evening to forget for the champions.
Second-placed City's loss means Liverpool, chasing their first English title since 1990, can move seven points clear with a win over Leicester.
It was a remarkable result given City took just 24 seconds to open the scoring.
Raheem Sterling crossed to David Silva and the City midfielder bravely headed it back as he collided with Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Aguero pounced on the loose ball to poke home from close range for his 17th goal of the season.
But City lost their rhythm after that and were punished when Salomon Rondon equalised for Newcastle in the 66th minute from Isaac Hayden's header.
There was worse to come for City in the 80th minute.
Fernandinho's foul on Sean Longstaff gave Matt Ritchie the chance to score from the penalty spot and the Newcastle midfielder fired his effort low into the net.
It was City's first defeat since a loss at Leicester on December 26, ending a run of eight successive wins in all competitions.
Solskjaer had overseen eight straight victories in all competitions - including six in the league - since replacing the sacked Jose Mourinho in December.
He lost that perfect streak, but still finished impressed by United's never-say-die spirit at Old Trafford.
Ashley Barnes put Burnley ahead in the 51st minute and Chris Wood struck in the 81st minute to double their lead.
But former United star Solskjaer, serving as interim boss until the end of the season after temporarily leaving Norway's Molde, has had the midas touch.
And in the 87th minute Jeff Hendrick dragged back Jesse Lingard to concede a penalty that was converted by Paul Pogba.
United poured forward and Victor Lindelof snatched the equaliser in the last seconds.
Cardiff paid an emotional tribute to Emiliano Sala following the striker's disappearance, but Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium.
Sala signed from Nantes in a club-record deal, but the 28-year-old Argentine was one of two people on board the Piper Malibu plane which vanished in the Channel Islands last week en route to Cardiff.
Yellow daffodils were carried onto the pitch by Cardiff captain Sol Bamba and there was a minute's applause before kick-off for Sala.
A banner shown by Cardiff fans read: "We never saw you play, we never saw you score, but Emiliano, our beautiful Bluebird, we will love you forever more." The Gunners took the lead in the 66th minute when Bruno Manga fouled Sead Kolasinac and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang stroked home the resulting penalty.

SIEWERT DENIED

Alexandre Lacazette's 83rd-minute strike ensured fifth-placed Arsenal moved level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing's stoppage-time goal was little consolation for Cardiff.
Ten-man Everton ruined Jan Siewert's first game in charge of Huddersfield with a 1-0 win over the bottom club at the John Smith's Stadium.
Former Borussia Dortmund reserve team boss Siewert replaced David Wagner, who left by mutual consent earlier in January.
But it was a nightmare start for Siewert as Richarlison's third-minute strike put Everton ahead.
Everton had defender Lucas Digne sent off for a professional foul on Adama Diakhaby in the 66th minute.
Wolves added to West Ham's woes with an emphatic 3-0 victory at Molineux.
Manuel Pellegrini's team suffered a shock FA Cup fourth round defeat at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday and they were brushed aside again by Wolves.
Romain Saiss gave Wolves the lead in the 66th minute before Raul Jimenez struck in the 80th and 86th minutes.
Second-bottom Fulham staged a superb fightback to boost their survival bid with a 4-2 win over Brighton.
Brighton raced into a two-goal inside 17 minutes thanks to Glenn Murray's double at Craven Cottage.
But Calum Chambers reduced the deficit two minutes into the second half and Aleksandar Mitrovic headed in for Fulham's 58th-minute equaliser.
Mitrovic capped the Cottagers' revival in the 74th minute before Luciano Vietto wrapped up the points five minutes later.

Football: Pochettino hails 'animal' Kane as striker eyes Spurs return

LONDON (AFP) - Harry Kane was on Thursday (Feb 21) labelled an "animal" by Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino as the striker battles to prove his fitness in time for Tottenham's weekend clash with Burnley.
The England captain has returned to training from an ankle injury that kept him out for seven games, with his club sitting third in the Premier League.
"He is very good and I think we need to assess him in one more training session and then decide," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference.
"He is doing very well and maybe he is going to be available at Burnley.
"Harry is an animal and wants to be ready as soon as possible. In the last 10 days he has been fantastic and having him back available is a fantastic boost for everyone."
Kane was initially expected to be out until the middle of March and he believes he is ready to start but Pochettino will not allow his judgement to be swayed by his player's opinion.
"I don't care if he wants to play or not," said the Argentine.
"I'll decide with my coaching staff and the doctor and sports science staff.
"Every player that came from an injury or illness, it's about the structure, when he's possible to play or not.
"If you ask him 10 days ago, he was ready to play. But the last word is always myself. I take the risk, the decision for the team."
The prospect of having the Kane back for heavyweight clashes against Chelsea, Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund in the next fortnight is a major boost for Spurs.
Kane has a history of shaking off injuries quicker than expected but Pochettino emphasised the need to plan his return carefully.
"When it's a massive injury it's completely different," said the Spurs boss.
"We're so happy that in the last 10 days he was fantastic, back in training again, and he can be available again. It's going to be a massive impact for everyone."
Kane's return leaves only Dele Alli in the treatment room as the England international recovers from a hamstring injury.
Pochettino put a one to two-week timescale on a possible return, which could see Alli back for the Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Borussia Dortmund on March 5.
With Liverpool not playing until Sunday and Manchester City in League Cup final action, Spurs could close the gap at the top of the table to just two points if they beat Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday.

Guardiola sorry City awarded 'offside' goal

LONDON • Pep Guardiola was apologetic after Manchester City were given a helping hand on their way to a 3-1 home victory over Watford, but insisted his side were deserving of the win that ensured they remained top of the Premier League table.
City were labouring to break down their opponents' massed ranks, until Raheem Sterling's controversial 46th-minute opener on Saturday changed everything.
The forward was initially flagged for offside as his effort looped over goalkeeper Ben Foster, but the decision was overturned by referee Paul Tierney following a close discussion with his assistant referee.
While Sterling was in an offside position as he latched onto Sergio Aguero's layoff, it was deemed the ball was kicked to him by Watford defender Daryl Janmaat.
His interference was enough to convince Tierney that the England international, who went on to complete his hat-trick before substitute Gerard Deulofeu scored a consolation goal, should be ruled onside. But Guardiola admitted post-game he was "sorry" the balance of the game hinged on that decision.
He also backed the introduction of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the league next season despite complaints over its use in the Champions League last week and felt Sterling could "have done better" despite taking his tally to 18 goals in all competitions this term.
The City manager said: "There should be an easy solution and, next season... with VAR, that will not be a problem - it will be fairer.
"At the beginning of the season, Manchester City voted to install VAR. Some clubs didn't accept it. Hopefully next season, like in other countries in Europe, we can install it. I apologise to Javi (Gracia) and to Watford if the first goal is offside, but we were incredible.
"We made an incredible game, we played well in the first-half and they had only one shot on target - their goal - against us.
"The three goals (by Sterling) were fantastic but... he didn't help us a lot defensively in the first half and he gave the ball away a lot."
His opposite number Gracia was angered by the call, which basically altered the course of the game.
"Today, in my opinion, it is clear," the Watford boss said. "At the moment Aguero touched the ball, Sterling is in an offside position, a clear offside position, maybe (by) two metres. After that, he is in an offside position and he has influence as well because he goes to the ball.
"It is true the defender touches the ball, but he touches it because Sterling is close to him and is going to press him."

Spurs must drop Lloris for top 4, says Jenas
LONDON • Tottenham throw open the doors of their new stadium against Crystal Palace in the Premier League today, but the spotlight will not just be on the refurbished ground, with captain Hugo Lloris right in the firing line.
The France goalkeeper has made eight errors that have led to goals since August 2016 - only Everton's Jordan Pickford has more with nine - and his latest howler last Sunday as Liverpool claimed a last-gasp 2-1 win at Anfield was further evidence of his growing fallibility.
Former Spurs midfielder Jermaine Jenas also feels Lloris "is not providing that kind of security at the moment", having let Tottenham down too many times.
Ahead of the Palace clash, a must-win match with the club having taken only one out of 15 points from their last five league games, he told the BBC: "In the situation Spurs are in, chasing a top-four place, they need better from their captain.
"You cannot legislate for mistakes from your goalkeeper, but Lloris has been making them for a couple of seasons now. He seems to have a reputation based on what he has done in the past."
Calling on Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino to drop the 32-year-old, he added: "Tottenham's priority now is not about sentiment... All that matters is finishing in the top four, because getting Champions League football next season is so important for the club's future."
However, former Spurs goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt has backed Lloris.
He told talkSPORT: "Two seasons ago, he was by far the best goalkeeper in the Premier League. Even though they're going through a bad patch now, Tottenham don't let many goals in.

Football: Aubameyang brace gives Arsenal win over Burnley

LONDON (REUTERS) - Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shot to the top of the Premier League scoring charts with two goals in Saturday's (Dec 22) 3-1 home win over struggling Burnley, returning his side to winning ways after two straight defeats.
The Gabon forward gave Arsenal the lead in the 14th minute, knocking in a pass from Sead Kolasinac after a classy ball from Mesut Ozil. He then smashed high into the net in the 48th to complete an impressive counter-attack from Unai Emery's side.
Burnley, 18th in the table and without an away win since September, hit back with a scrappy goal from Ashley Barnes having spurned a good chance to take an unlikely lead at the start of the game when Ashley Westwood was denied by the feet of Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
Substitute Alex Iwobi restored Arsenal's two-goal cushion with a simple finish in stoppage-time, helped by another clever move from German playmaker Ozil, who was left out of the team for Wednesday's 2-0 League Cup defeat by Tottenham Hotspur.
Aubameyang's brace moved him on to 12 goals for the season, leapfrogging Liverpool's Mohamed Salah as the league's top scorer and taking fifth-placed Arsenal on to 37 points, level with Chelsea who play Leicester City later.
Arsenal's 22-game unbeaten run in all competitions was halted on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at Southampton and they were knocked out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage with a painful home loss to north London neighbours Tottenham.
They were given little respite from a highly physical Burnley side but ultimately had too much quality for Sean Dyche's side.
"We expected it to be tough, we prepared the match thinking about what they would do, that they would be strong in the air, so we made sure we won the duels and we also wanted to impose our game plan," Arsenal coach Emery told reporters.
"We could not play as we wanted to for 90 minutes but we are very happy with the victory. Physicality is part of football, you always need to be strong as well as impose your quality, and our victory today is a consequence of this."
Burnley coach Dyche credited his team for causing Arsenal problems, but cursed their own defensive vulnerabilities.
"Overall, I was pleased with the performance, especially the mentality to come here and take on the game," he said.
"A couple of their goals were soft, but attacking-wise we were a problem today for them. We could have got something but we know even with a good performance you can't afford to give away goals like the two we let in."

Football: Sevilla stun holders Barca 2-0 in Copa del Rey

MADRID (REUTERS) - Sevilla produced a brilliant second-half display to beat Barcelona 2-0 in their Copa del Rey quarter-final, first leg on Wednesday (Jan 23), leaving the holders with an uphill task to reach the last four.
After an even first 45 minutes, strikes from Pablo Sarabia and Wissam Ben Yedder stunned the Catalans and left them needing a second-leg comeback at the Nou Camp for the second consecutive round in the competition.
Barca, who earlier in the day announced the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Ajax Amsterdam, handed a debut to loan signing Kevin-Prince Boateng.
Yet it was Sevilla - spurred on by a raucous home crowd - who looked the more threatening throughout.
The Andalusian side were incensed when a Video Assistant Referee review deemed Barca's Arturo Vidal had not handled Ever Banega's cross after half an hour, with replays indicating the ball had struck the upper part of the Chilean's arm.
A persistent threat throughout, Ben Yedder fired narrowly wide after a mesmeric solo run, before being denied by a smart save from Barca keeper Jasper Cillessen.
At the other end, Malcom fired wide after rounding Sevilla keeper Juan Soriano against the run of play on the stroke of halftime.
It was all Sevilla after the break, and Pablo Machin's side took a deserved lead just before the hour.
Quincy Promes drove down the left before crossing for Sarabia, who fired in a half-volley from six metres out. French forward Ben Yedder then doubled their lead from close range with quarter of an hour to go.
He celebrated by lifting his shirt to reveal the message "For my brother Sala", in reference to Argentine striker Emiliano Sala, who is currently missing after the plane he was travelling on disappeared over the English channel.
The second leg takes place next Wednesday, while Espanyol take on Real Betis and Real Madrid host Girona on Thursday in the remaining quarter-final, first legs after Getafe defeated Valencia 1-0 on Tuesday.
